A homeowner with a privately owned mailbox is responsible for their own mailbox. The USPS will require the individual homeowner to fix or replace if not in useable condition. Many multi-family or multi-tenant dwellings, apartment complexes and condominiums have centralized or cluster mailboxes. Those units are approved for use by the USPS but in most cases are the responsibility of the property owner, manager, or HOA (Home Owner Organization) to install and maintain. The USPS will service mailboxes that are owned and maintained by them, but not if it is privately owned. If the broken mailbox is part of a multi-unit dwelling, the facility’s Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs) will identify who the responsible party would be in the event of a broken mailbox.
